5 Dental Health New Year’s Resolutions for 2021

New Year, New You!

After 2020 we could all use a refresh! So, what were your resolutions? Do any of them involve your dental health? Even though January has come to a close (doesn’t the time fly?) it’s never too late to start better habits to improve your dental health.

Dental Resolutions

Make 2021 a year to smile about with these dental health new year’s resolutions.

Visit the Dentist

Whether it’s been a few months since you’ve seen the dentist or you just want to plan ahead - schedule your next visit! This will put you on a routine for the rest of the year and give you a date to look forward to. Take care of your teeth and prepare for your appointment your dentist will notice the improvements!

Brush and Floss Your Teeth

It is important to brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily. If you’re not doing this already it’s best to start with this small change. To improve your daily routine even more make sure that your toothbrush is the right size, it’s at a 45-degree angle when brushing and that it’s replaced every 3 or 4 months. These tips will help with more effective cleaning.

Make Healthier Food and Drink Choices

Everything we intake impacts our mouth. That is why it’s important to make healthier choices. Food and drinks that contain carbohydrates and sugar contribute to tooth decay. Patients should brush after snacking and consider gum that contains xylitol. Both will reduce your chances of developing cavities as well as remove plaque.

Cut Out the Tobacco

Smoking, vaping, or using chewing tobacco all negatively impact your oral health. Quitting is a great way to improve not only your oral health but your overall health. What a better time than now to start? There are so many resources you can use to help you quit and your teeth with thank you for it!

Switch It Up!

If you are already doing all of the above and taking great care of your teeth, there are still resolutions you can make.

  • Try out an electric toothbrush rather than your traditional one
  • Buy a waterpik, or new floss or toothpaste that your dentist recommends
  • Add mouthwash to your routine
